An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
