Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
